DESCRIPTION:An understanding of processes is important for projecting chan
ges into the future\, rather than simply extending correlative patterns sp
atially or temporally. In the ecological realm\, there are few process bas
ed models that can inform decision making\, in comparison with the field o
f earth system science for example. I will introduce a process-based model
of ecosystem structure and function that is truly global in scope coverin
g both the marine and terrestrial realms. The model represents the process
es of interaction between organisms grouped by functional traits and captu
res the flow of matter and nutrients across trophic levels in what will be
  a stoichiometrically consistent manner.
