DESCRIPTION:Mary Treat (1830 - 1923) was a published Naturalist from New J
ersey and a correspondent of Charles Darwin. A comparative reading of thei
r correspondence alongside their published works raises some interesting q
uestions about the workings of gender ideology in the scientific context:
how and why did Treat and Darwin's epistolary voices differ from their pub
lished equivalents? And what can their correspondence tell us about the ro
le and status of 'scientific' women in the nineteenth century?
