DESCRIPTION:Superconductivity is 100 years old this year. It was discovere
d by accident\, and the progress made in understanding and utilising the e
ffect over the last century has been a series of fits and starts involving
unexpected findings\, surprising developments\, insurmountable brick wall
s that have suddenly melted away and penetrating insights. The effect is o
ne of the most unusual macroscopic manifestations of the weirdness of quan
tum mechanics. In this talk I will attempt to describe the highlights of a
century of research\, as well as look forward to what the future of super
 conductivity will be.
