DESCRIPTION:If the economy is to be decarbonised in the next decade or so\
 , new technologies\, in particular new energy technologies\, will play a k
ey part in reducing emissions. Much of the analysis of the emergence and i
mplementation of new energy technologies is based upon a substitution of o
ne existing technology for that of another based upon cost. This presentat
ion will attempt to demonstrate that such analysis is based upon a misunde
rstanding about how technologies are diffused. Instead\, the presentation
will illustrate how the diffusion process has occurred in a range of case
studies and how designing and applying a policy framework that supports su
ch diffusion would be a more effective approach to rapidly decarbonising t
 he economy.
