DESCRIPTION:Ruth Swetnam\, currently based in the Zoology Department\, is
passionate about\nmaps and will talk about how different geographical pion
eers have mapped the\nland use of Britain. We live on a crowded island and
the use of the land has to be\nplanned and managed in order to balance th
 e competing needs of 60 million\npeople for food\, housing\, water\, energ
y\, work and recreation. In order to do this we\nneed to understand the ba
sic geography of our surroundings. As a nation\, we have\nled the field in
this endeavour for nearly 80 years and have produced many\nfascinating an
d beautiful maps along the way.
