DESCRIPTION:The conventional paradigm is that the properties of an organis
m are determined by its DNA sequence. Organisms with identical DNA will b
e identical and those with different DNA will grow differently or they wil
l not respond in the same way to external stimuli. However there is also e
vidence for another layer to heritability in which changes are not associa
ted with alteration of DNA sequence – they are “epigenetic” rather
than genetic. I will describe epigenetics in plants and how recent progre
ss is affecting our understanding of the biology and evolution of both pla
 nts and animals.
