DESCRIPTION:In this mainly expository talk I shall discuss polynomial\nseq
 uences in groups\, especially Leibman's work establishing their group\nstr
 ucture. Some examples will then illustrate how algebraic properties of\npo
 lynomial sequences in a nilpotent Lie group yield basic\ntopological/geome
 tric properties of an associated nilmanifold that are\namong the main fact
 s underlying the connection between nilmanifolds and\narithmetic combinato
 rics.
