DESCRIPTION:The predicted onset of 'peak oil' in either this decade or the
next\, as well\nas the need to reduce GHG emissions in order to mitigate
climate change\, have made the development of clean and renewable energy s
ources an important area of research. Microalgae are potentially an excell
ent source of biofuels: they are highly productive and can be grown on non
-arable land\, and so do not compete with food crops. However\, biodiesel
from algae is currently not economically feasible. This talk will introduc
e some of the limitations that affect the productivity of algae\, and the
 current 'gap' to feasibility.
