DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*: Jones is often seen as a disciple of Palladio. How
ever\, his work was also shaped by national forces and a negative reaction
to Italian architecture. This lecture will examine the links between the
column and the crown prior to Jones's work. It will discuss how notes made
following his visit to Rome in 1614 can be viewed in the context of Prote
stant decorative sensitivities. Jones's subsequent buildings will be exami
ned in the light of these notes. Jones will be shown to have sought to est
ablish a temperate classism\, distinct from the excesses of Rome and consi
stent with Protestant aesthetics.\n\n*Biography*: Vaughan Hart is the Prof
essor of Architecture and the Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies
in Architecture at the University of Bath. His books include 'Art and Magi
c in the Court of the Stuarts' (Routledge 1994)\, 'Sebastiano Serlio on Ar
chitecture' (Yale University Press\, 1996 and 2001)\, 'Nicholas Hawksmoor:
Rebuilding Ancient Wonders' (Yale University Press\, 2002)\, 'Palladio's
Rome' (Yale University Press\, 2006)\, 'Sir John Vanbrigh' (Yale Universit
