DESCRIPTION:Chimpanzees inhabit a wide variety of habitats in sub-Saharan
Africa\, from rain forest to savanna. Their behaviour\, whether in subsist
ence or sociality\, varies greatly too. To understand this diversity requi
res careful comparative study\, seeking data on differences and similariti
es across populations. I have pursued these aims from Senegal to Tanzania\
, and published books and articles accordingly. However\, this talk descri
bes and illustrates what lies behind the science\, what never appears in j
ournals\, about what the research entails.
