DESCRIPTION:Antarctica is remote\, hostile and uninhabited and hugely impo
rtant for understanding our planet. For the scientists who work in Antarct
ica\, engineering and technology is essential for addressing scientific ch
allenges\, but even living and working safely in Antarctica is demanding u
pon the people and the engineering and systems that maintain them. This ta
lk will give an overview of the importance of Antarctica and the engineeri
ng challenges to those who work there. The design of the new research sta
tion Halley VI will be discussed as will autonomous scientific instruments
that operate in the vast areas away from the manned research stations.
