DESCRIPTION:Classical Hodge theory says that the sheaves of exterior\ndiff
 erentials control the usual Betti cohomology of a smooth complex\nprojecti
 ve variety X. Is there a similar relation between the sheaves of\nsymmetri
 c differentials and the topology of X? In this talk I will explain\nhow sy
 mmetric differentials control finite dimensional representations of\nthe t
 opological fundamental group of X. Using automorphic forms this leads\nto 
 new striking rigidity properties for fundamental groups of certain ball\nq
 uotients.
