DESCRIPTION:While the inclusion of the Social Sciences in the field of Bio
ethics has often been sought and welcomed by policy makers\, the relations
hip between the two has been fraught with difficulties and disagreement. M
oral\nphilosophy tends to dominate the field and is underpinned by abstrac
t but robust moral theories which their practitioners draw on to develop m
orally\nreasoned arguments about the right thing to do. The social science
s on the other hand have increasingly become detached from their epistemol
ogical\npositions and appeal to their data -as evidence of what 'is' and d
o not always address the issue of what ought to be done. I suggest a 'soci
o-ethical' approach as a way forward. This approach will be illustrated wi
th reference to empirical research on families and\nbiomedicine.\n
