DESCRIPTION:Submarine sediment density flows e.g. turbidity currents and d
ebris flows\, can transport sediment thousands of kilometres from the cont
inental shelf to the deep sea. The deposits of these flows demonstrate tha
t they commonly contain large amounts of clay. However\, most experiments
that aim to model these flows do not contain cohesive particles. I will pr
esent experiments conducted in an annular flume using mixed flows of sand\
, clay and water. These experiments demonstrate the profound influence of
small changes in clay content on flow rheology and deposit morphology.\n
