DESCRIPTION:Charge pumping is a transport mechanism of generating electric
current in the absence of a bias voltage. In the non-adiabatic regime the
system is driven out of equilibrium and the ability to control the number
of pumped electrons per modulation cycle has long been considered unfeasi
ble. Non-adiabatic pumping with high precision has recently been realized
in tunable barrier devices\, following the advances in surface-acoustic-wa
ve-driven transport. The (re-)discovery of this mechanism provided new mom
entum to the developments of quantized current sources in the field of met
rology. This talk discusses the pumping mechanism\, its potential precisio
n and its wider applications\, including quantized voltage generation and
 excited state preparation.
