DESCRIPTION:The TIME project has focussed on urban traffic\, using the cit
y\nof Cambridge as an example. We have investigated sensor and\nnetwork t
echnology for gathering traffic data\, and have designed\nand built reusab
le software components to distribute\, process\nand store sensor data in r
eal time. We have shown that these\ndata can be used for a number of purp
oses.\n\nFirstly\, archived data can be analysed statistically to\nunderst
and the behaviour of traffic under a range of "normal"\nconditions at diff
erent times\, for example in and out of school\nterm. Secondly\, periods
of extreme congestion resulting from\nknown incidents can be analysed to s
how the behaviour of traffic\nover time. Thirdly\, with such analyses pro
viding background\ninformation\, real-time data can be interpreted in cont
ext to\nprovide more reliable and accurate information to citizens.\n
