SUMMARY:Bread\, beer and bugs: How biologists unravel the molecular machin
ery of life - Dr. David Gordon\, University of Cambridge

DESCRIPTION:The fundamental unit of life is the cell\, a self-replicating
machine which performs every function of a living being: motility\, growth
\, reproduction\, metabolism\, and adaptation. The goal of cell biology i
s to understand the tiny components that comprise these machines\, and how
they work together to perform vital tasks. Charged with our task of reve
rse-engineering the building blocks of life\, biologists have developed an
array of imaginative techniques to dissect the molecular components insid
e our cells. After this talk\, you’ll never think of bread\, beer or bug
 s the same way again!
