 , both as a basic tool for engineering and technology\, and as an intellec
 tual challenge to explain the hidden and mysterious properties of arithmet
 ic suggested by the study of numerical examples. The lecture will be non-t
 echnical\, and will survey a few of the most influential discoveries about
  numbers\, from the Babylonians to the present day. It will also briefly g
 ive a non-technical explanation of what are arguably the oldest and the ne
 west major open problems about numbers.
