SUMMARY:Ice-atmosphere-ocean interactions around Greenland - Dr Poul Chris
toffersen\, University of Cambridge\, Scott Polar Research Institute

DESCRIPTION:The net annual loss of ice in Greenland is currently around 20
0 gigatonnes\, which is enough to raise sea level by 0.6 mm per year. Arou
nd half this loss is caused by surface melting linked to atmospheric warmi
ng\, the other half is lost by increased flow and discharge of icebergs in
to fjords. Whereas a number of studies clearly show that the contribution
to sea level rise is increasing\, the magnitude of future rates is extreme
ly uncertain. This talk will outline the recent change of the Greenland Ic
e Sheet and explain how it is linked to changes in atmospheric as well as
 oceanographic conditions.
