DESCRIPTION:The world's forests currently act as a major carbon sink\, off
setting a large proportion of emissions arising from land-use change and t
he burning of fossil fuels. A key question is whether forests will continu
e to act as a sink in the coming decades and centuries. I will explore th
is question using detailed information collected over 30 years in New Zeal
and forests\, and consider the wider implications of our work. I will also
discuss how airborne remote sensing technology is making it much easier t
o monitor forests at the landscape scale.
