DESCRIPTION:This qualitative study used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)
to explore how university students in Somaliland construct citizenship and
clan identity\, how these identities influence students as they practice
some of their citizenship rights\, and how they manage to consolidate when
these identities conflict. In addition\, students’ perceptions of how e
ducation helps them develop and consolidate these identities were explored
. Four focus group discussions were conducted to collect data from the par
ticipants. The findings of the study show that citizenship in Somaliland i
s ‘mediated’ – the clan acts as a mediator between the individual an
d the state. The findings also highlight how clan identity takes precedenc
e over other identities in most of the participants’ social and politica
l life and how it prevents the formation of strong shared identity
