DESCRIPTION: It is presumed that those who are more apt at monitoring thei
r behaviour are also more apt in portraying themselves in any given light\
, as required of them by the situation they find themselves in. When it co
mes to work settings\, an individual high in self-monitoring is expected t
o show a higher level of impression management\, or so to say\, deceptive
behaviour.\n An analysis of the literature on the subject indicated that t
he relationship between impression management and self-monitoring may not
be such a straightforward one. Therefore\, a study was conducted under the
hypothesis that the two concepts do not go hand in hand\, but are in fact
orthogonal. A negative correlation found between impression management an
d self-monitoring implied that deception might be less a matter of predisp
osition and more a matter of personal choice.
