DESCRIPTION:At finite rates of supercooling\, many liquids fall out of equ
ilibrium and into an amorphous solid phase. This lecture describes and ill
ustrates the nature of dynamics in the two phases and the dynamical transi
tion that connects them. Recent papers on the approach to this topic taken
in this lecture: \n\nKeys et al\, "Excitations are localized and relaxati
on is hierarchical in glass-forming liquids" arXiv:1107.3628\n\nJack et al
\, "Preparation and relaxation of very stable glassy states of a simulated
liquid" arXiv:1109.2715\n\nSpeck & Chandler\, "Constrained dynamics of lo
calized excitations causes a non-equilibrium phase transition in an atomis
tic model of glass formers" arXiv:1110.4546.
