DESCRIPTION:Exploring quantum matter\, or systems in which quantum statist
ics apply because high energy modes are frozen out\, has a long history in
the Cavendish. Electron liquids in metals or correlated insulators combin
e high carrier density with low carrier mass to produce degeneracy energie
s well above room temperature in many cases\, opening up routes to practic
al applications or devices. The seminar will review selected research them
es\, including (i) novel electronic order such as unconventional supercond
uctivity and unusual forms of magnetic\, charge or orbital order\, (ii) br
eakdown of the standard single-particle description of electrons in solids
\, (iii) advances in experimental methods in high magnetic fields\, low te
 mperatures and high pressures.
