DESCRIPTION:We show various optimization results for the principal eigenva
 lue of general uniformly elliptic second order operators under Dirichlet b
 oundary condition in C^2^ bounded domains of R^n^. In particular\, we obta
 in a "Faber-Krahn" type inequality for these operators\, which generalizes
  the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequality for the principal eigenvalue of the L
 aplacian. The proofs use a new rearrangement method. This is joint work wi
 th François Hamel and Nikolai Nadirashvili.
