DESCRIPTION:A groundbreaking passive real-time location system developed u
nder Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) The Intell
igent Airport (TINA) project with the University of Cambridge will enable
retailers\, airlines and other businesses to inexpensively and effectively
monitor items' locations in real time. A major objective of the approach
was not only to overcome the limited range for reliable detection passive
tags so that antennas could be placed with spacings of 20 m (comparable wi
th conventional wifi spacings)\, but also to provide accurate real-time lo
cation. As an output of the project a proof on principle demonstrator was
created. The solution\, which recently won the Royal Academy of Engineerin
g's ERA Foundation Entrepreneurship Award\, could save airlines millions o
f pounds. Retail groups have also been engaged in the project - not just f
or tagging items\, but also for the advancement of self-service checkouts.
\n\nBiography: Dr. Sithamparanathan Sabesan received his MPhil and PhD de
grees from Cambridge University. He was previously with ARM\, as a student
IP Electronic Engineer. He has just been elected to a Junior Research Fel
lowship at Girton College\, Cambridge University. Dr. Sabesan has recently
been selected as the winner of The UK EPSRC ICT Pioneers Connected World
Award\, as well as the The Royal Academy of Engineering ERA Foundation Ent
