DESCRIPTION:Cancer systems biology is an approach by which cancer-related
cell-biological questions are addressed through iterative cycles of data-d
riven modelling and model-driven experimentation. In my presentation I sha
ll review and point out limitations in the current practice of pathway-cen
tric mechanistic modeling. This leads me to a new perspective that integra
tes levels of structural and functional organization: from the molecular/c
ell level to the tissue level\, from network models to multilevel systems\
, from studying mechanisms to identifying organizing principles. Organizin
g principles in systems biology are robust generalizations\, akin to natur
al laws in physics or chemistry. I argue that the search for organizing pr
inciples requires novel approaches and I shall give examples for the direc
tion in which these new developments should go. \n\nwww.sbi.uni-rostock.de
