DESCRIPTION:This session will consider the deepest and probably the most c
onfusing of controversies of modern validity theory: what is a construct\,
and are constructs actually that important when planning and conducting v
alidation work? In the field of education\, critics have recently proposed
that the conceptual baggage associated with construct validity is unneces
sary\, and that we would be better to return to more straightforward conce
ptions more in line with the traditional concept of content validity. Do t
hese critics have a point? Participants will be encouraged to explore the
meaning of constructs within construct validity and the extent to which co
nstructs are central to validation within educational assessment.
