DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will outline an emergent analytical framework \
, an adaptation of Orit Hazzan's three perspectives on abstraction\, for u
se in analysing textbooks. The three perspectives ares described as famili
arity\, operationality and simplificability. Familiarity refers to the ext
ent to which didantic materials reflect that which is already understood b
y the learner\; operationality refers to the extent didantic materials pro
vide scaffolding support\; and simplificability refers to the extent to w
hich didantic materials exploit transformations. The framework has been us
ed on English and Taiwanese textbooks to examine the extent to which abstr
action \, as a mathematical process \, is supported.
