DESCRIPTION:Many species exist together\, allowing high levels of biodiver
sity and efficiently functioning communities. Ecological dynamics on commu
nities\, such as stochasticity and density dependance\, affect the trophic
and social interactions between species and thus affect outcomes of speci
es persistence\, community biodiversity and functioning. The other major i
nfluence on these interactions will be the characteristics of the species.
\n\nA computer model is used to track the effects of stochasticity and den
sity dependance on a Scottish deep-sea fish community using real species t
raits. Results highlight the importance of using characteristics in modell
ing accurate community reactions to changing ecological situations.
