vinson (Reader in Education\, Institute of Education University of London)

DESCRIPTION:There has been a shift in emphasis in science curriculum polic
y from a predominantly instrumentalist approach towards values of citizens
hip and democratic participation. Such tendencies reflect aspects of delib
erative democracy in which shared aims are striven for through processes o
f rational discussion and deliberation. I will argue that there is a lack
of epistemological justification and empirical grounding for these aspirat
ions and present new models which hold out more promise for social justice
and democracy. However these models also carry risks and uncertainties.
