DESCRIPTION:Debates about the functionality or otherwise of human emotions
date back to the ancient Greek philosophers and have exercised the mind o
 f some of humanity's greatest thinkers – Plato\, Aristotle\, Descartes\,
Hume\, Darwin and Freud. Advances in cognitive neuroscience have shed fur
ther light on this important question and contemporary opinion suggests a
range of important functions of the emotion system. This seminar presents
the case for a functional model of emotions drawing on a range of fascinat
ing experimental results.\n\nFor an introduction\, see the surprisingly co
