DESCRIPTION:Over the last 20 years\, researchers have been making steady p
 rogress\nimproving the sensitivity of force-detected magnetic\nresonance.
Sensitivity has doubled roughly every 8 months and\npresently surpasses th
e sensitivity of conventional\, inductive nuclear\nmagnetic resonance dete
ctors by 8 orders of magnitude. In 2009\, IBM\nresearchers demonstrated th
e promise of these developments by using\nmagnetic resonance force microsc
opy (MRFM) to capture 3D images of\nindividual virus particles with a reso
lution better than 10 nm. I\nwill describe new efforts to apply this tech
nique to the small\nensembles of nuclear spins contained in semiconductor
 nanostructures \nsuch as quantum wells\, nanowires\, and quantum dots.\n\n
