DESCRIPTION:We present the detailed Star Formation History of the nearby S
culptor \nand Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxies\, from wide-field photometr
y of \nresolved stars\, going down to the oldest Main Sequence Turn-Off. T
 he \naccurately flux calibrated\, wide-field Colour-Magnitude Diagrams are
\nused directly in combination with spectroscopic metallicities of \nindi
vidual RGB stars to constrain the ages of different stellar \npopulations\
, and derive the Star Formation History with particular \naccuracy.\nThe d
etailed Star Formation History shows the star formation at \ndifferent age
 s and metallicities\, at different positions in the galaxy\, \nand shows t
hat the known metallicity gradients are well matched to an \nage gradient.
The obtained SFH is used to determine accurate age \nestimates for indivi
dual RGB stars\, for which spectroscopic abundances \n(alpha-elements\, r-
and s-process elements) are known. In this way\, we \nobtain the accurate
age-metallicity relation of each galaxy\, as well as \nthe temporal evolu
tion of alpha-element abundances.\nThis allows us to study\, for the first
time\, the timescale of chemical \nevolution in these two dwarf galaxies\
, and determine an accurate age of \nthe "knee" in the alpha-element distr
ibution. Finally\, we compare the \ntimescale of chemical evolution in bot
h dwarf galaxies\, and determine \nwhether the chemical abundance patterns
seen in galaxies with recent \nepisodes of star formation are a direct co
ntinuation of those with only \nold populations.\n
