DESCRIPTION:The Foreign and Colonial Investment Trust (FCIT) is the oldest
surviving closed end \nfund in the world today. Its early success was rel
ated to its identification of a missing market\, \nnamely\, the provision
of a wholesale diversified investment vehicle for the investing public. \n
Whilst much research has been conducted on aggregate international capital
flows in this \nperiod\, little work has been undertaken on the prime inv
estment institutions. This micro-study \nseeks to fill this gap by underta
king detailed quantitative analysis of the leading investment trust \ninve
sting widely in emerging markets during the first era of financial globali
sation before WWI. \nThe history of this flagship investment trust over mo
re than three decades up to 1913 provides \nan insight into the relative s
uccess of this institutional innovation as well as into the risk and \nret
urns of investing in global emerging markets over a century ago. \n
