DESCRIPTION:Most public displays deployed today literally disappear: peopl
 e have become so\naccustomed to their low utility that they have become hi
 ghly skilled at\nignoring them. In contrast to Mark Weiser's influential v
 ision of the\n``Computer for the 21st Century\,'' however\, public display
 s of the 21st century\nshould not disappear. Rather they should become the
  backbone of a new global\ncommunications medium that provides valuable in
 formation to viewers who are\nmotivated to actively embrace the technology
 .\n\nIn this talk I will argue that the transformation of public displays 
 to this\nnew communications medium requires significant innovation that ca
 n only occur\nthrough opening display networks to applications and content
  from a wide range\nof sources\, such as city officials\, local residents\
 , and visitors. Based on\nthis idea I will discuss our work in creating th
 e building blocks to realise\nthis vision and our experiences of running a
 n experimental public display\nsystem for over seven years.\n\n
