DESCRIPTION:The development of human rights regimes around the world is ba
 sed on a belief that there are such things as universal values. This idea 
 is challenged most potently in the areas of gender and sexuality\, where p
 atriarchal power relations often combine with religion to oppose women's e
 quality. This lecture will engage with the claims of cultural relativism a
 nd steer a course through the struggle for human rights in societies which
  are multi-ethnic and multi-religious.
