DESCRIPTION:Some metabolic dysregulations are inherent to psychotic disord
ers. Metabolomics - a new technique that analyses the complete collection
of metabolites produced by an organism - has led to the discovery of metab
olites in post-mortem brains and peripheral blood in schizophrenia. We wer
e interested in the identification of metabolic compounds in peripheral bl
ood that allow the identification of individuals with a first episode of p
sychosis (FEP)\, amongst their first-degree relatives and healthy unrelate
d controls. The identification of metabolic endophenotypes in psychotic di
sorders may support diagnosis and treatment and increase the currently lim
ited understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders.
