DESCRIPTION:Radiotherapy\, using electron accelerators to produce beams of
  X rays to treat tumours\, is well established and very effective in many 
 cases. But proton and heavy ion accelerators can also be used\, targeted d
 irectly and with high precision onto the tumour\, maximising the damage to
  it while minimising that to healthy tissue.
