 Graham Burton\, Department of Physiology

CONTACT:Dr Xavier Moya
DESCRIPTION:The placenta is the interface between the mother and her baby
and is essential for our development in utero\, so much so that in some so
cieties it is considered as a twin of the baby and must be reunited with t
he individual on their death. During pregnancy\, all materials transferred
between the mother and baby must pass through the placenta\, either by pa
ssive diffusion or active exchange. The placenta also produces an array of
hormones that have a profound effect on maternal physiology during pregna
ncy. This talk will introduce some of the basic concepts of the organ\, an
d touch on aspects of contemporary research that have direct bearing on co
 mplications of human pregnancy.
