DESCRIPTION:Semiconductor microcavities provide a favourable system for th
e formation of high density phases at elevated temperatures in an all soli
d state environment. The physics of the high density polariton phase in su
ch structures will be described. Particular phenomena which will be covere
d will include the formation of long temporal and spatial coherence\, beha
viour in one and two dimensional periodic potentials\, and the formation o
f vortex and soliton excitations. Where appropriate\, analogies will be gi
ven with phenomena in atomic condensates.
