DESCRIPTION: Consider supercritical branching Brownian motion on the real
line\n(particles diffuse according to Brownian motions and reproduce at co
nstant\nrate)\, where additionally a particle gets killed whenever N parti
cles are to\nthe right of it (we call this model the N-BBM). Brunet\, Derr
ida\, Mueller and\nMunier predicted detailed statistics of the fluctuation
s of this model in\nthe large population limit. In this talk\, I will pres
 ent a related model\,\nwhich consists of introducing a random space-time b
arrier at which particles\nare instantaneously killed in such a way that t
he population size stays\nalmost constant over time. I will show how one c
an prove the physicists\npredictions for this approximate model\, which is
a first step in the study\nof the N-BBM.\n
