 tion asks whether colonial schools were vectors of emancipation for coloni
 sed peoples or whether they contributed to a wider system of subjugation. 
 My aim is to defend a position that rejects this binary opposition\, but d
 oes not serve as a liberal apology for the colonial project. In this prese
 ntation\, I will discuss the difficulties I have encountered in developing
  a clear formulation and defence of this position.
