DESCRIPTION:The classical subfield of complex analysis known as geometric
function theory has experienced a recent vogue in the last 10 years\, in n
o small part due to the success of Schramm's SLE processes. However\, it s
eems that the theory of conformal mappings (other than the occasional Moeb
ius map) do not usually feature prominently in graduate courses.\n\nIn my
talk\, I plan to give a rather informal overview of some aspects of geomet
ric function theory\, with a bias towards my own interests. The idea will
be to convince you that conformal maps have rather interesting and unexpec
ted properties\, and that they can be quite useful.
