DESCRIPTION:The Lyman-alpha forest in QSO absorption spectra is a sensitiv
 e \n probe of the matter distribution as well as the physical state of the
 \n Intergalactic Medium. I will present constraints  \n on the mass of (wa
 rm) dark matter particles and discuss \n the ionization state of the Inter
 galactic Medium at $z>5$.  \n I will further  discuss prospects of  measur
 ing the \n redshift drift and improving constraints on the variability of\
 n fundamental constants with the ultra-stable high-resolution\n spectrogra
 ph proposed for the ESO-ELT.
