DESCRIPTION:“Ferrocement was invented in the mid-19th century by Joseph
Lambot\, consisting of very thin sections of cement mortar (10-40mm) rein
forced with fine steel mesh. Until now its use has been almost entirely l
imited to boats and “do-it-yourself” buildings\; ferrocement has not y
et entered mainstream construction and architecture. A team from Expeditio
n Engineering and Renzo Piano Building Workshop have\, over the past 18 mo
nths\, taken ferrocement through a rapid technical development process in
order to take advantage of the unique properties of ferrocement to create
a large canopy above the new Greek National Opera House. This talk will de
scribe and discuss the development and innovation process needed to take a
n ‘old’ material to a new level\; more highly engineered than ever bef
ore\, and in the context of the modern construction industry.”\n\n
