DESCRIPTION:Mr Michel Schammel (PhD Astrophysics) will give a talk titled
“Clusters of galaxies: what they can tell us about the history of the Un
iverse”. Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound objects i
n the Universe and can tell us much about the history and evolution of the
Universe. In his talk Michel will focus on the “big picture” rather t
han going into the fine details. He will show us some amazing pictures and
explain how astrophysicists investigate clusters using AMI\, a radio tele
scope based just outside Cambridge. \n\nMr Josh Scheinert (lawyer and LL.M
. student) will give a talk titled “Status and Territory: where certaint
y has become elusive”. In an age of global terrorism\, counterterrorism
and transnational law enforcement\, what does it mean to be a citizen with
in the nation state? Where does the nation state begin and end\, and what
privileges come with membership? Josh will discuss how governments continu
e to pursue terrorists abroad and protect national security at home\, so t
hat the meaning and interpretation of status and territoriality are front
and centre and vital to understanding the present era. Borders are both re
ndered meaningless and employed in the strictest sense of the term. Citize
nship too\, has taken on a new\, malleable meaning that lessens the inexor
able connection between state and citizen.
