DESCRIPTION:Chlamydomonas reinhardtii actively accumulates CO2 via the pyr
enoid\, a microcompartment which is located inside the single chloroplast
of the model alga. The vast majority of Rubisco is aggregated in the pyren
oid\, and recent work in our lab has established that Rubisco also control
s pyrenoid formation via two small subunit surface helices (Meyer et al.\,
in preparation). Here I present results showing that distant residues on
both helices are necessary for pyrenoid formation. Furthermore\, I show th
at loss of the CCM as a result of the absence of a pyrenoid (Genkov et al.
\, 2010) significantly changes the energetics of photosynthetic light harv
 esting.
