DESCRIPTION:Plants translate stress stimuli as well as metabolic changes t
hrough specific changes (“signatures”) in cytosolic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]c
yt). The channels involved remain poorly characterized. Annexins (Ca2+-de
pendent membrane-binding proteins) have recently been shown to act as Ca2+
-permeable channels in plants. Annexin 1 (ATANN1) of the model plant Arabi
dopsis thaliana was also implicated in mediating stress signalling in root
s and could be acting as a channeI. It is expressed in root epidermal cell
s and these are accessible to [Ca2+]cyt measurements. Its presence in lea
ves and its role in drought stress has also been previously shown. We hav
e used yellow cameleon 3.6 (YC3.6) to monitor in vivo differences in [Ca2
+]cyt dynamics between wild type and the atann1 knock-out mutant on guard
cells and will show preliminary root imaging work.
