nd fire risks - Yohay Carmel\, Technion Faculty of Civil and Environmental

DESCRIPTION:Ecologists and environmental scientists are increasingly asked
to provide specific predictions for the future. The major predictive tool
available to scientists is the model. This talk will discuss the nature o
f models as tools for prediction\, emphasizing various problems\, restrict
ions and limitations. Some of these obstacles will be illustrated using tw
o studies in which I was involved recently. The first study concerned pred
icting the probability of invasion by fire ants at a global scale\, while
the second study predicted fire risk at a very local scale
